Angels have helped, consoled and accompanied biblical figures since the Middle Ages; Gabriel announcing to Mary her future childbearing and the angel figure who often brings the martyr's palm leaf to virtuous Christians. Satan was the favourite angel before his treason and Cabanel paints him as an Adonis of alarming beauty. Cupidon, Eros and the putti in general are loyal companions of Venus and the history of love, yet even with their wings and sometimes chubby forms they are not angels.
