Houdon Gallery

The former municipal library reading room which dates from 1869-1841 now holds large Neoclassical paintings. These works are predominantly historical paintings such as the mythological, allegorical, historical and religious subjects by Vien, Vincen, Suvée, Lagrenée and especially Fabre, who was one of David's best students. Sculptures, such 'Voltaire seated' by Houdon, are seen at their best when the sun is at its zenith. The works by François-Xavier Fabre were absent from the museum's walls during the retrospective exhibition held at the Musée Fabre until February 2008 and then in Turin at the Galleria d'arte moderna, until June 2008.
