Columns Gallery

The Columns Gallery displays a panorama of the evolution of 18th century historical painting. Its exceptional collection of a ten reception pieces for the Royal Academy of Painting feature large scale works by Coypel and Restout in brilliant colours, still marked by the majestic century of Louis XIV, the virtuoso, sensual and energetic touch of the Rococo painters De Troy, Raoux, Natoire, Deshays and Trémollière, and the monumental severity of the Neo-Classical paintings by Vien, Le Lorrain, Lagrenée, Suvée, and finally Fabre, who closes the gallery. It is under the amused gaze of Voltaire to Houdon that a century of art history plays out.
