Works selected for this touring exhibition to Japan produce a comprehensive overview of French paintings form the core collections of the Musée Fabre, with works by some of the finest French painters, tracing the history of the French school from Poussin in the 17th century, to the late 19th century, and Matisse.

The exhibition includes a number of well-known masterpieces, including Courbet's pivotal work The Meeting ("Bonjour, Monsieur Courbet!"), together with a large number of recently-restored works scheduled for the newly-renovated museum. The present selection of 90 works has provided an opportunity for in-depth documentary and historical research, bringing to light a wealth of new information about the works in the museum's collection, much of it now published in the exhibition's bilingual catalogue.
